Sora sank to the stone steps outside Merlin’s house. He scuffed the heel of his shoe against the loose spray of gravel and turned his face up toward the dark sky. He had very few opportunities lately to be alone, and while he valued Donald and Goofy’s companionship, sometimes a little silent reflection could be just as consoling—despite the doubt certain others had in Sora’s abilities of profound cogitation.

He grinned at the stars, every twinkle a reminder of what he and his friends had already accomplished. He clenched his fists against the cool stone, scraping his knuckles. Riku was out there somewhere.

“I’ll find you,” he said.

“What do you know—my thoughts exactly.”

Sora leapt to his feet, keyblade in hand. A cloaked figure was standing near the bend that led to the bailey.

“Who are you?” Sora shouted, his voice rebounding off the high walls.

The figure moved into the moonlight, revealing the pointed ends of his hair a ruddy shade in the darkness.

“You’re not going to start that again, are you?” he asked, tilting his head to the side and giving Sora an amused look.

Sora’s eyes narrowed and his hands tightened around the keyblade. “You’re Axel.”

Axel grinned and extended his hands, palms up to show he held no weapons and wasn’t aiming for a fight. “You do remember!”

Sora warily lowered his keyblade. “What do you want?”

He’d met Axel only the day before, but Axel had yet to prove himself ally or enemy. Either way, Sora wasn’t going to take any chances of him being the latter.

At his question, even in the dark he could see Axel’s face transform from mild amusement to full-blown humor, his eyes squeezing shut for a moment as his shoulders shook with silent laughter.

“What do I want?” Axel repeated after he’d composed himself somewhat.

Sora glared at him, not at all certain what the man found so funny. He opened his mouth to ask him again when Axel’s smile abruptly wilted and his body sagged in apparent defeat. Sora’s eyebrows narrowed suspiciously. Was he trying to throw him off?

“What do I want?” Axel whispered, lifting his head to give Sora an oddly baleful look. He took a step forward and Sora lifted his keyblade a notch, but Axel seemed unconcerned.

“Axel?” Sora asked uncertainly.

The keyblade flashed, disappearing from Sora’s hand just as Axel reached out, fingertips brushing Sora’s cheek. Sora’s first instinct was to move away, but the look in Axel’s eyes was riveting. He’d never seen such intensity in someone’s eyes before, except maybe when he looked in the mirror.

“You’re still him,” he murmured, face lowering.

Sora’s eyes widened when he realized what Axel meant to do. He stumbled backward, tripping on a step and falling flat on his back. He stared up at Axel with wide blue eyes, mouth agape.

Axel seemed to snap back to himself. He lifted an arm and rubbed the back of his neck before giving Sora a deceptively carefree smile. “Sorry about that. Maybe I’ll see you next time, eh?”

Axel disappeared in a wisp of dark energy, leaving Sora sprawled across the steps. Sora swallowed, fingers clutching at the stone and knowing, not for the first time, that Axel hadn’t been talking to him.

…not the end but discontinued…for now :D
