Riku knew it was him by the way he stood with shoulders thrown back, spine rigid and chin lifted as if-even alone on that strip of white sand clad in nothing more than shorts and a faded t-shirt-that familiar dark coat still hung from his slight frame, the Key of Destiny even after that destiny had long since reached its culmination.

His head turned as Riku approached, blue eyes vivid even in the darkness. The moon cast silver lights in his hair. Riku wanted to look away.

Roxas smiled, a condescending tilt of lips cast in shadow. Riku could feel the fine trembling in his arms give way to irritation, a welcome replacement. Irritation was an emotion he could deal with.

Roxas’s eyelids drooped and he watched Riku through slivers of blue condemnation. Riku lowered his head, silver hair falling forward, carving odd shadows over the contours of his face. Roxas closed his eyes.

“Don’t,” Riku whispered.

His eyes fluttered open and he regarded Riku coolly. “You’re a coward,” he said, but his hands lifted to the strong curve of Riku’s shoulders anyway. Scorn. Exasperation. Acquiescence.

Riku pressed their mouths together, breath rushing hotly against their lips. “Sora…”

He could feel the bitter sting behind his eyes so he kissed Roxas harder, searching for that glowing door he knew was there beneath the layers of shadow, beneath the coat, the arrogant smile, the cool blue eyes that reflected light and darkness both. It was that duality that Riku recognized, that delicate balance of dusk that had captivated him the first time he’d pushed Roxas up against the smooth marble walls of a dark castle, seeking a familiar light he hadn’t yet known was there.

His hands slid down a warm back, blunt nails scoring across a thin t-shirt, moving with the assurance that his darkness couldn’t taint this part of Sora. He pushed Roxas into the sand–limbs and shadows tangled amidst the surf.

The end.
