Darkness was all it knew. Except sometimes the sliver of something more winked briefly into existence. A flash of an image it should know but didn’t, the memory of an emotion it should feel but couldn’t.

Its feet slid from tile to tile in the fluid motions of its dance, aware only of its miniscule existence as it passed through the halls of a black and white castle, past an open set of doors. It paused at the murmur of voices. The odd collection of sounds meant nothing to it; all it knew of those dark figures nearby was that it would bend to their will because they were stronger.

But a word caught at the fringe of its limited consciousness. Dance. And its undulating back stiffened as it remembered dainty slippers and an ivory comb and pale brown eyes and the weight of a warm hand on its shoulder… and then the memories distorted like water on wet paint and the nobody slid away, its brief moment of lucidity already forgotten.
